The Daikenchuto Story

Daikenchuto is a small, highly focused research firm that was established in 2001 with the sole objective of creating clinically supported fecal impaction therapies. While our core competency lies in gastrointestinal disorders, it is our super-specialization that has allowed us to offer the leading fecal impaction product on the market today.

We would like to give you a glimpse of the journey that has led to the launch of our breakthrough therapy. It will give you a clear picture of the true driving force behind our company and the wonderful people that work with us.

Why is our primary focus just limited to fecal impaction?

We’ve been asked this question time and time again. In a world where most companies offer a wide variety of products for all sorts of digestive ailments, our company stands apart because we limit our research and development to only resolving fecal impaction and constipation.

Here’s why…

When we first looked at the gastrointestinal disorders landscape over two decades ago, we found that constipation in particular was not only a highly prevalent condition, it was a condition that put a tremendous health burden on the general population.

Here’s what the data shows:
And the situation is far worse for fecal impaction sufferers:

As a company that lives and breathes data, it was clear to us that fecal impaction was a condition that needed better clinical outcomes. And so began the mammoth research effort into analyzing why fecal impaction sufferers were facing such dire consequences despite the availability of so many treatment options.

What we found was utterly surprising…

Current treatment options for fecal impaction are either ineffective or dangerous

Our research uncovered that when it came to treating a fecal impaction, the sufferer encountered many hurdles. The first major problem being misapprehension on the part of the patient.

Research indicates that constipation misperception is a very common problem among sufferers and this leads them to make poor treatment choices.
The second big problem is diagnosis.

Multiple studies show that due to the subjective nature of the experience of constipation, there is often a disconnect between what the patient feels and what the doctor needs to accurately diagnose the problem. This means that during most doctor-patient interactions, the physician has no choice but to treat the problem empirically, often relying on a trial-and-error approach.

Research also reveals that the advice being given to patients does not always serve them well. For example, we have now learned that the common recommendation of eating more fiber, drinking more water and getting more exercise is not as helpful for treating constipation as once thought.

A review of the OTC treatments available on the market shows that they have many safety concerns when it came to using them for fecal impaction. For example, laxatives and enemas not only increased the chances of a bowel perforation during an impaction, they also did not offer a long-term solution because of dependence and tolerance issues.

In fact, studies indicate that 8 out of 10 people currently on a constipation medication want a more effective treatment than their existing one.

By the end of our literature analysis, we knew that we needed to come up with a completely novel solution to fecal impactions that didn’t parallel current therapies and had to work on a therapy from the ground up.

However, to do that we had to address our biggest challenge yet – creating the most comprehensive model of the constipation and fecal impaction disease process based on our most current understanding of both conditions.

Creating an integrated model that connected all types/sub-types of constipation and fecal impaction

Part of the reason why constipation has the tendency to become a chronic problem and why fecal impaction responds so poorly to over-the-counter treatments is because patients have the difficult task of first identifying the true cause of their problem and then choosing the ideal combination of treatments to target that underlying cause.

What complicates things even more is that many patients have a combination of different types and sub-types of constipation, which requires a complex mix of therapies to effectively treat the problem. What was certainly clear is that our solution had to be just as dynamic as the problem and be able to address all the possible types and sub-types of constipation with a single therapy.

To that end, our research team created a cohesive model of constipation and fecal impaction that looked at the problem as a single functional bowel disorder where all the different types and subtypes fell into a spectrum. This model was so inclusive that it incorporated everything from incidences of occasional constipation to advanced fecal impaction. In fact, even the damage process of fecal impaction was broken down into 9 stages for more granular analysis. Most importantly, the model was based on extensive clinical inquiry to ensure that it was both scientifically current and valid.

It was based on this comprehensive and integrated model that we created our list of 10 desired therapeutic targets. The end goal being that anyone, regardless of what type, sub-type of constipation and regardless of the severity of fecal impaction could use the therapy to find fast, safe and long-lasting relief.

The solution came from an unlikely place – Kampo Medicine

In the years that followed, our research team uncovered many potential compounds that would help us address our therapeutic targets, however our discovery process showed an interesting trend. It seemed that traditional Japanese medicine, known as Kampo, had shown tremendous promise in not only treating various gastrointestinal conditions but fecal impaction in particular. Kampo medicine had not only passed the rigor of use for over a millennia, their medicines were also put through meticulous clinical scrutiny in the form of well-designed studies.

The effectiveness of Kampo medicine was also reflected by public health data on the Japanese population which showed that they had among the best GI functions in the world which contributed to their higher than average life expectancies when compared to the rest of the world.

It was our exhaustive foray into Kampo medicine that led us to our final formulation that accomplished everything we had hoped to with a single product.

The Daikenchuto Breakthrough

Working with a Japanese master formulator that specialized in Kampo medicine and combining it with our extensive analytical lab tests, we were able to finally end up with a product that addressed every single one of the 10 therapeutic targets that we identified as crucial to treating fecal impaction and reversing the long-term gut disorder behind it:

Daikenchuto is nothing short of an amazing breakthrough when it comes to restoring your digestive function and helping you avoid all the complications associated both fecal impaction and all the dangers having an impaired gut. With over 25 clinical studies published in respected journals worldwide, it has proven to be both safe and effective. In fact, Daikenchuto is actively prescribed by doctors in Japan for not just constipation and fecal impaction but also to treat issues like post-surgery ileus.

What makes it so effective is that it uses a multifactorial approach to treat all types and sub-types of constipation and varying severities of fecal impaction. This takes away any need for guess work to figure out what underlying cause is contributing to your problem.
